On Thursday, January 11, the construction of the world's tallest building storing electricity began in Daofu, China, with a projected expense of 15.1 billion yuan, equivalent to $2.11 billion. According to reports, once it is finished, this energy facility can store millions of kilowatt-hours of electricity every day to cater to millions of families' needs of millions of families.

Power Station's Construction

With 1,419 large and small rivers flowing within its borders, Sichuan has also been called the province of a thousand rivers. In addition, it is characterized by its varied elevation, which extends from the heights of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and the Hengduan Mountains down to the Sichuan Basin. The valley that separates its highest and lowest points is almost 7,000 meters in altitude. Because of this, Sichuan has perfect conditions for hydropower, which is now the primary energy source in the province's overall combination of sources.

Construction on the Daofu Pumped Storage Power Station began this week in Daofu County, located in Sichuan Province, southwest of China. In Sichuan, the electrical power station can keep 12.6 million kilowatt-hours of electricity daily, sufficient to fulfill the energy requirements of 2 million families every day.

This facility's estimated annual producing capacity is 2.994 billion kilowatt-hours, and it has a total installed power output of 2.1 million kilowatts. Moreover, due to its installed capacity, this initiative is the most extensive pumped storage project in the province, and it stands as the tallest pumped storage power station globally, with an altitude of 4,300 meters.

Following the completion of construction, the power station will have a capacity of 2.1 gigawatts (GW), which means that it can generate more than 2.99 terawatt hours of electricity annually. Accordingly, during the peak time, the facility will produce energy by releasing the electricity stored during the off-peak period. This will increase the power output from wind and solar power and stabilize the irregular solar energy production of approximately 6 GW.

On the other hand, the Yamzho Yumco Lake pumped-storage power station, located in the Tibet autonomous area of southwestern China, is now the highest-altitude pumped-storage power plant in the world, which is built at an altitude of around 3,600 meters.

Advantages of Daofu Pumped Storage Power Station

According to Yu Chuntao, the director of the firm's Daofu project, more knowledge needs to be used to compare large-scale pumped storage projects in high-altitude regions at this time. The Daofu project is characterized by a high degree of exploratory and complex design, development, and production of electrical equipment.

As a result of the countless ground-breaking accomplishments that were accomplished in the design and construction of the Daofu project, Yu believes that the development and manufacturing of necessary equipment for pumped-storage power stations in China will be significantly advanced.

Furthermore, once it is finished, the building of the Daofu project will be of great importance for several reasons, including the enhancement of the power supply guarantee capacity, the promotion of the technological and practical advancement and usage of new energy, the development of a demonstration base for clean energy that is of world-class quality, and the promotion of outstanding economic and social development in the surrounding territory.
