Construction of First Three-Story 3D-Printed House in North America Finally Completed

By Bernadette Salapare | Mar 12, 2024 01:06 AM EDT

With its recent construction, a three-story building in Canada is considered to be the first three-story 3D-printed house in North America. The foundational component of the project, which was constructed using a 3D printer, was supplied by Cobod International, a company specializing in building 3D-printed structures. This company also partnered with Nidus3D, an engineering company, to carry out the construction.

First 3D-Printed House in North America

Cobod International's 3D printer was utilized while constructing the 420-square-meter structure close to Toronto. It is 12.5 meters from the footing to the top of the roof, which is the height of the home, which has 3.5 stories. Specifically, three complete stories have been produced in three-dimensional form using actual concrete and materials collected from the surrounding area.

Incorporating the world's first 3D-printed basement, a standard feature in many homes in North America is another aspect that sets this mission apart from others. In contrast to traditional basements, which are often poured into place, this basement was printed by immediately inserting the 3D printer into the excavation during the construction process. Because of this, the walk-out basement is easily accessible.

Moreover, classic brick siding and a steel-framed roof comprise the exterior, printed in eighty hours. As Hugh Roberts, co-founder of Nidus3D, stated, the company is thrilled to be the first in North America to construct a three-story structure using 3D-printed concrete successfully. This accomplishment includes the construction of a basement below grade. It reportedly showcases what can be achieved by combining Nidus3D's industry-leading experience and engineering with the most advanced 3D printing technology.

Additionally, Philip Lund-Nielsen, co-founder of Cobod and head of Americas, expressed his pride that Nidus3D has surpassed its record by 3D printing the first three-story building in our hemisphere. Other Cobod customers outside of North America have also accomplished this feat. Thus, completing the world's first 3D-printed basement is yet another remarkable accomplishment that only amplifies the technology's potential to revolutionize the building industry.

About Cobod International and Nidus3D

With over 80 printers dispersed across North and Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia-Pacific, COBOD is the industry leader in providing 3D printers for the construction industry everywhere in the world. The company envisions automating 50% of the building procedures to obtain faster, more cost-effective, and more sustainable solutions with greater design versatility. Its objective drives this vision to transform the construction industry using versatile robots that use three-dimensional printing.

Three-dimensional printers manufactured by COBOD have been helpful in the construction of structures ranging from one to three stories in height throughout all six continents that are populated. These constructions include residential, commercial, and public buildings, educational institutions, and sports facilities. Also, some examples of the one-of-a-kind technology they have produced include large-scale data centers, towers for wind turbines, tanks, and other buildings.

Furthermore, nidus3D is a Canadian robotic construction firm established in 2021. The company is known for its novel approach to creating speedy, low-cost printed structures through automated, on-site 3D concrete printing. To revolutionize how homes are constructed, nidus3D, a process-oriented organization, is at the forefront of technology-driven innovation in the construction industry.
