Lightning Strike Near Construction Site

Upon receiving information about the incident, the Housing and Development Board (HDB) confirmed that lightning struck near the Bartley Beacon Build-To-Order (BTO) building site on the afternoon of Thursday, Dec. 28.

As per the HBD, it occurred in the area where the workers had been preparing and relocating to shelter in observance of safety protocols during the rain. However, three of the workers subsequently reported experiencing dizziness.

Two individuals were transported to the Tan Tock Seng Hospital, while the other worker was transported to Singapore General Hospital for treatment. All workers are recovering fully and are anticipated to be discharged in the coming days. The board will persist in carefully reviewing the contractor's progress and guarantee their welfare.

On the other hand, a news correspondent observed the construction site the day following the incident and found that operations had resumed normally. Based on the statements made by several groups of migrant workers, they were mindful of the unfortunate event but were unaware of what had happened.

The human body is prone to suffering severe harm if it is struck by lightning directly. It is also possible to suffer from burns, cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, and paralysis. Thus, although lightning impacts nearby, it is also possible for individuals to sustain injuries.

Meteorological Service Singapore Forecast on Thunders

The Meteorological Service of Singapore (MSS) noted on its website that thunderstorms are a common occurrence in Singapore throughout the entire year. On average, around 167 days of thunderstorms and 176 days of lightning are observed on the island annually.

On Tuesday, Dec. 12, the organization indicated that widespread thunderstorms were occurring around the island. The most significant amount of rainfall was observed for the first two weeks of the month in Woodlands, with 89.9 millimeters of total rainfall recorded daily.

A rainfall of 110% more than usual was measured in Yio Chu Kang and 33% below average in Punggol during the first half of December. In contrast, the majority of the island received above-average precipitation.

In the weather advisory that was issued on Friday, Dec.15, the MSS warned that thundery showers are anticipated to occur in the afternoon on most days during the second half of December. On some days, they may reportedly continue into the evening. Yet, some of the showers may be massive and heavy.

Additionally, it is anticipated that the northeast monsoon conditions that have been present since the beginning of December will continue to prevail throughout the remainder of the month, with winds primarily coming from the northwest or the northeast.

Furthermore, temperatures are expected to range from 24 degrees Celsius to 33 degrees Celsius on most days during the next two weeks, with the daily maximum temperature perhaps reaching 34 degrees Celsius on some days, even though rainfall is expected to be thunderous.
