Bricktown Project Aims to be the Tallest Skyscraper in the US

Proposal on Bricktown Project Height Increase

An Oklahoma City neighborhood known as Lower Bricktown has been the subject of collaboration between a developer based in California, Matteson Capital, and the Alliance for Economic Development of OKC. In December, the proposal called for the construction of a hotel with 22 stories, two condominium towers with 23 levels, restaurants, and shops.

According to Kenton Tsoodle, CEO and President of the Alliance for Economic Development of Oklahoma City, who spoke with KFOR in December, the city council has already approved an incentive package attached to the project. The offer is based on the construction of a development that is valued at least $500 million. At that time, the developers estimated that the central tower in the development would reach a height of 1,750 feet. This would make it the highest structure in the state and the second-tallest skyscraper in the country, surpassing One World Trade Center.

On Monday, Jan. 22, developers expressed their intention to submit a request to construct the structure at an increased height of 1,907 feet. Upon receiving approval, the tower will attain the status of the fifth tallest structure globally. Moreover, Scot Matteson, the Chief Executive Officer of Matteson Capital, stated that Oklahoma City is currently going through a tremendous era of growth and transition, leaving the city in an excellent position to sustain large-scale projects such as the one envisioned for Bricktown. They anticipate that this establishment will serve as a symbol of the city's progress and variety, attracting investment, new companies, and employment while adding to the expansion and diversification of the burgeoning economy. Additionally, the atmosphere is vibrant, and the developer reportedly strives for The Boardwalk at Bricktown to become the symbol of Oklahoma City.

Reasons Behind The Proposal

New York and Chicago, the three most significant cities in the country, are home to the ten tallest buildings in the country. At around 700,000 residents, Oklahoma City is the 21st largest city in the United States. Between 2020 and 2022, Oklahoma City experienced a growth of approximately 2%. In the United States, Oklahoma City was one of 14 cities with a population growth of more than 100,000 people between 2010 and 2020.

On the other hand, as part of a new mixed-use development project that will include restaurants, retail establishments, and other attractions, the architects and real estate investment firm AO and Matteson Capital declared their intentions to construct the skyscraper in Oklahoma City this week. Accordingly, since the pandemic, the work-from-home revolution has reduced the demand for office space, which is an additional factor contributing to the unexpected nature of the development. Therefore, rather than workplaces, the Oklahoma City tower would have a Hyatt hotel with hundreds of rooms, 1,750 residences, and 110,000 square feet for shopping and eateries.
