Bicyclists in Rockford

Alongside supportive facilities, the Rockfords have constructed over 70 miles of off-street and on-street paths, multi-use paths, and footpaths in each ward since the initial plan. The League of American Bicyclists recently made an announcement in which they presented Rockford with an honorable mention for the efforts that it has made to support bikers. Nevertheless, the city does not meet the criteria for a bike community designation due to several policies and outside causes. As mentioned, Rockford's riding capabilities were the primary subject of a ten-year plan established by the city's officials in 2010.

As per Jeremy Carter, the city's traffic engineer, the growth and keeping up with other bike communities, such as Madison, Wisconsin, were the subjects of attention throughout the initial ten years of the city's existence. However, in 2020, Carter speaks about the shifting gears that will be implemented for community biking, with safety being the primary focus.

Rockford's congestion and environment make it difficult for engineers like Carter to ensure the safety of cyclists, even though the League ranks Illinois as the fifth-best state for pedestrians and cyclists. Despite this, Carter indicates that the League will soon be sending an additional report card your way. It will identify specific processes and difficulties that city engineers must overcome to complete the project.

Cycling Popularity in the USA

The surge in the number of people riding bicycles during the epidemic has resulted in the continuous expansion of the main bike-share programs in the United States. Based on the data provided by the United States Bureau of Transportation Statistics, the annual ridership of bike-sharing programs in six cities across the United States increased by 27% in 2022 compared to the levels before the epidemic, reaching approximately 45 million trips. Thus, the year 2023 is expected to follow suit with another record spike.

On the other hand, although San Francisco, Washington, and DC had lower ridership in 2022, this may also be beginning to change with time. As mentioned, in the first five months of 2023, ridership in Washington, District of Columbia, has significantly surpassed levels before the pandemic.

As cycling became more prevalent during the pandemic, policy director for the League of American Bicyclists, Ken McLeod, stated that bike-share has remained an appealing option for urban commuters and an accessible entry point for inexperienced bicyclists. This is especially relevant because numerous bike-share fleets have recently purchased additional electric bicycles. Accordingly, renting an e-bike at a particular location and parking it at another reduces biking anxiety, from parking and parking to climbing a significant hill.

In addition, some cities, including New York, have increased the number of bicycles and stations available. Ever since it was first implemented in 2013, the program in additional York City has expanded the number of bicycles by a factor of two and added hundreds of additional stations. On September 21, 2019, the program even surpassed 100,000 daily journeys.

In 2019, the de Blasio Administration unveiled strategies to address the unprecedented surge in demand, which included expanding the service area twofold and increasing the number of motorcycles employed to 40,000 by 2023. Furthermore, according to the most recent information, Citi Bike plans to extend its operations throughout the Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn within the same year.
