Three engineering firms are collaborating to reevaluate the framework of bridges and viaducts in the Netherlands, ensuring their safety and durability. This extensive assessment, spanning several years, aims to maintain the structural integrity of these crucial elements in the country's infrastructure.

Ensuring Safety and Durability of Netherland's Bridges and Viaducts
Under a new structure, the Dutch Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management, known as Rijkswaterstaat (RWS), has entrusted Arup, IV, and Wagemaker with the responsibility of reevaluating bridges and viaducts located throughout the Netherlands. The partnership between the groups will contribute to improving bridge management techniques and the durability and safety of crucial transportation systems in the Netherlands.
As mentioned, a hundred steel, moveable, and concrete bridges in the Netherlands will be evaluated by this strategic alliance over the next six years to ensure that they are structurally sound and have a long lifespan in operation. Arup guides steel structures within the framework, IV is responsible for intricate movable bridges, and Wagemaker is tasked with concrete and safety concerns.
Increasing transport loads and maintenance and regeneration of bridges and viaducts are some of the issues Rijkswaterstaat will face due to the framework's assistance in preparing for these challenges.
By utilizing its 15 years of experience in bridge engineering on the Galecopper Bridge, Suurhoff Bridge, and Van Brienenoord Bridge, Arup can draw upon its significant expertise in monitoring and prolonging the operational longevity of aging transport structures for RWS. Thus, with an emphasis on both sustainability and efficiency, the collaboration intends to maintain existing infrastructure in areas where it is practicable while simultaneously performing essential renovations to ensure that it will continue to work effectively over the long term.
Also, Rijkswaterstaat will reportedly obtain actionable information regarding bridges and viaducts' structural integrity and remaining lifespan. These insights will inform the decision-making process regarding maintenance, restoration, and life extension activities.
