Mitchell City's New Recycling Facility Building Consideration

On Monday, the Mitchell City Council will vote on granting a proposal to a contractor to construct a new recycling facility. A total of four proposals were submitted throughout the project. Nevertheless, based on the city officials' recommendations, WS Construction Management's low bid of $2.1 million is the best option. Accordingly, the city's recycling facility is situated a considerable distance away from the dump. The facility is responsible for sorting recycled materials, while the city's recycling staff transport non-recyclable items to a separate landfill, which reportedly incurs additional costs.

In 2020, the city decided to implement a single-stream recycling approach, which necessitated establishing a specific building so that crews could filter through the recycled materials collected by the town. Following the implementation of the switch, city crews have begun collecting recyclable materials, which has increased the amount of household recycling that is being done. Moreover, before the city began to take up the responsibility of recycling, Mitchell's recycling services were managed by a private sanitation company. Thus, the 'poor condition' of the recycling facility also prompted city officials to pursue the endeavor.

On the other hand, Public Works Director Joe Schroeder stated that relocating the city's recycling transfer facility to Mitchell's regional landfill would result in a more streamlined and economical operation. Also, the local government received a grant of one million dollars for the construction of the recycling building. Approximately 50% of the overall project expenses were funded by a state Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources grant.

Thus, to sort recyclable materials before transporting cargoes to Sioux Falls, city staff will use the recycling facility, which will cost $3.1 million. Millennium Recycling, a company based in Sioux Falls, receives all of Mitchell's recycled materials after they have been loaded up and transported there. The city has entered into a contract with Millennium to receive Mitchell's recycled material.

Why Does Waste Need to be Recycled?

As the rate of landfill overcrowding increases, natural resources are depleting. The manufacturing, consumption, and disposal system we currently use is no longer within sustainability. Everyone, from the smallest of individuals to the largest of businesses, must reevaluate our thoughts and how we relate to rubbish disposal.

Through the reduction of the quantity of waste that is produced and the reuse of materials that are already in existence, each of us can make a difference in the preservation of the environment, the preservation of natural resources, and the preservation of the planet for future generations.

As mentioned, when objects are recycled rather than raw materials used to manufacture new things, the globe's natural resources are preserved. Moreover, compared to the extraction, processing, and transportation of raw materials, the production of new goods consumes less energy.
